Flossing: The Benefits

Don’t overlook it! Flossing is the ONLY way to remove the bacteria in hard-to-reach areas between teeth and below the gums.

Flossing is one of the best things you can ever do to take care of your teeth! Twice a day is best, but flossing at least once a day is important to disrupt and remove harmful bacteria from between your teeth.

  • Decrease risk of gum disease
  • Better breath
  • Removes harmful plaque bacteria from between teeth
  • Polishes tooth surfaces

Fluoride: Rinsing your way to healthier teeth.

  • Fluoride is nature’s powerful cavity fighter! It helps prevent and can actually reverse the early signs of tooth decay.
  • Use a fluoride mouth rinse and you’ll add an extra layer of fluoride protection to your oral care routine. There are several over-the-counter options available, formulated for children and adults. A few examples are ACT, Listerine with fluoride, and Fluoriguard.
  • Rinse twice daily. Rinse after you brush, floss or eat, you’ll get the most benefit then, so the fluoride can stay on the teeth and go to work.
  • Remember to supervise children the first few times they use it to be sure they spit the rinse out correctly.

Fresh Breath: The cleaner your mouth, the fresher it will smell.

  • Chewing gum, most mouthwashes, and mints are temporary fixes, and tend to cover up rather than remove the source of the problem which is bacteria, food debris, and sulphur compounds produced by certain bacteria that live in the mouth.
  • The best solutions involve thorough cleansing of the mouth. Floss and brush after meals as much as possible, at a minimum at least rinse with water after meals.
  • Stay hydrated with water.
  • Use a tongue scraper at least once per day to remove bacteria from your tongue, morning is the best time for this.
  • Clean your nose, especially when the air gets dryer in the colder times of year. Use a Netti Pot, which can be purchased at the drugstore. You can use ½ teaspoon of pure sea salt to a Netti pot of previously boiled and warmed water. Do not use water directly out of the tap, as there can be bacteria in that water. This will reduce allergens and odor causing bacteria from your nose.
  • Take care of any dental health conditions you may have. Gum disease and dental decay cause bad breath.
  • Use a mouthwash designed to neutralize sulphur compounds. Oxyfresh can be purchased online (oxydental.com) and is a good mouthwash to neutralize the bad breath gases that are produced in the mouth.
