Warren Dentist Gives Advice on How to Prevent Tooth Decay

Warren Dentist, Dr. Greg Apsey gives advice on how to prevent tooth decay. Tooth decay is caused by certain bacteria that live in your mouth. It usually starts as a result of bacteria in the mouth interacting with sugars in your diet, causing the formation of acid. The acid damages your tooth enamel. Once your enamel is gone, it will not come back. And once the decay gets into the underlying part of your tooth, you will need dental treatments (fillings). If you don’t want to have to undergo dental treatments, follow these recommendations by Warren Dentist, Dr. Greg Apsey and you will be on your way to preventing tooth decay and maintaining a healthy smile!

How to prevent tooth decay:

  • Brush with fluoride toothpaste and floss a minimum of at least twice daily.
  • Use a fluoride rinse before bedtime, which will help make your teeth more resistant to acid. There are many on the market, but a few examples are ACT, Listerine with fluoride, and Fluoriguard.
  • Avoid sweet or acidic beverages and foods in-between meals.
  • Have juice with meals only and be sure to brush, floss or at least rinse with water after meals.
  • Maintain a healthy diet and be sure to drink lots of water.
  • Consider home brewed green or black tea, tea contains natural fluoride.
  • Consider adding xylitol to your diet. It is a natural sweetener that quickly neutralizes the acids in your mouth. It is best to use between meals to help reduce the acids in your mouth. You can use it in gum, candies, or packets that can be added to tea or coffee. These are available at our office or at local health food stores.
  • Visit a dentist at least twice a year for regular scheduled visits.
